Nathan Newport Bio

I was born in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. By the age of three, I had also lived in Florida, Minnesota, Spain, and California. As you might garner from my father's bio, staying in one location was not an experience I was going to have. I cannot claim to remember much of those early years, but I do believe that my mind was influenced by the intense observations that youth tend to make.

The family was still in Southern California when I was age nine. A few months before my tenth birthday, life took another sharp turn when we moved to rural Japan. Only days after arriving in the town, which was covered by snow banks taller than me standing, I began attending local Japanese school. On my first day of school, when I still only knew a few words in Japanese, my sister and I were asked to make a "repeat after me" introduction of ourselves in Japanese to a crowd of students sitting on the gym floor in long straight lines.

I ended up living in Japan for about eight years total before assimilating back into life in the U.S. While that period of adolescent life was full of difficult adjustments, the experience taught me how to adapt and thrive by using all of the senses I had available to me. As a result, I became hyper-sensitive to non-verbal cues and to observing the surrounding environments into which I was placed.

I believe the above are good explanations as to why I grew to appreciate art and music as much as I do. Artists and musicians are perpetually producing some type of medium / creation based on interactions with their surroundings and experiences. Oftentimes the output is a non-verbal expression of those interactions, and I find that life can be lived multiple times over by sharing in the creativity and outpour of emotions of others.

Ironically, my profession is as a financial advisor and portfolio manager. I love my work, and I find that art and music make me better at what I do. It hones my abilities to observe and to feel what others feel. Investing is in itself an art and not a science. Successful investing is partly achieved by making astute observations of people, individually and as societal masses.

The idea for this website came about because I had admired my father's art for several decades. Early in this trying year of 2020, I realized that I needed to make his art broadly available so that the lives of others could also be enhanced through his art, as was mine. Creating the site would also give me another reason to reach out and talk to my father more often.

As I began to build the site, I realized the potential it had to be a platform to host works of multi-disciplined artists and musicians. It could be a place that assists in the breaking down of boundaries and of building bonds between people through art and music. I want the site to be bold, to be different, to not conform to norms, and to take risks with content. I want to drive forth the individuality and creativity that lies within us all. Yet at the same time I want to encourage respect of our fellow global citizens. I want the site to be a place where guests come to feel the raw and honest energy of art, music, and humanity -- at times powerfully; at times subtly.

I have no timeline in creating this website. It will evolve over time, and if I can facilitate some to feel inspired, motivated, or just moved, I will have achieved what I set out to do. It is one way for me to keep seeking for truths and inspiration, to keep life full of meaning, to make new friends, and to contribute a positive energy back into society.
